I’ve spent some time reading through thousands of comments and hundreds of messages about Sunday’s post. Thank you for the kind words and for your constructive criticism.
I come here every day to write about the person I want to be, and to describe the world I want to live in. The post describes the manager I would like to become, but not who I claim to be.
Some of you felt the promises were unrealistic or impractical. Maybe that’s true. But I’m still going to write it all down, and then try to get as close as I can.
The promises describe the world that I want to live in. Judging by the response, so do you. Let’s all live there together!
Lots of you said things like “You sound like an amazing manager!” or asked “Can you really deliver on all of this?”
Sadly I am not, and no I cannot.
This post, and many of my others, was inspired by my own failures. I’ve managed a lot of people over the years. Sometimes I’ve done ok, sometimes I’ve done quite badly.
I structured the list as a promise because I want to do better in the future than I’ve done in the past. By writing down these ideas, I’m setting my intention to do better, to be better.
Managers set goals not only for their business and their products but for how they lead their teams. Writing is how I’m setting my goals for how I want to lead.
Stay with me, and I’ll let you know how it goes.
