Last week I started posting on Substack Notes. I would love for you to join me there!
There’s been a lot of kerfuffle recently about Substack, what it is and what it is not. Saying that Substack Notes is like Twitter is not inaccurate. You’ll probably find that you already know how to use it. Focusing on this comparison, though, is really missing the point.
The point of Substack is to create a direct connections for subscribers (that’s you) to meet writers (me!) That’s why I’m here. Twitter only did that by accident, and it’s no longer a place I would choose to meet anybody.
Notes is a way for writers to share links and short posts with readers. It’s like the post you’re reading now, delivered as a feed rather than an email or a web page.
Why Substack
Writing and content is now the focus of my career. To do it well, I want my readers to enjoy an experience that’s purpose-built for them. I also want tools that make it easy for me to write, to connect with you, and hopefully to make a living.
That’s what Substack aims to do. That’s why I chose this platform, and it’s why I’ve invested in the company.
To be successful Substack will need to earn our trust. That means doing better than those who came before with content moderation. I demand an environment that’s safe for all of my readers. If Substack can provide that, I think it’s likely to be successful.
It seems to me that the company has not quite figured our how it will do this. It’s worth pointing out that in the entire history of the internet, neither has anyone else. I’m willing to give them some time to show progress, but not very much.
Here’s one of my first Posts. I hope you’ll click on it and make your own reply and tell me what you think. Or post a comment to let me know what you think about Substack, Posts, or content moderation.
Thanks for reading.
How to join
Head to substack.com/notes or find the “Notes” tab in the Substack app. As a subscriber to Safe @ Work by Matthew Rechs, you’ll automatically see my notes. Feel free to like, reply, or share them around!
You can also share notes of your own. I hope this becomes a space where every reader can share thoughts, ideas, and interesting quotes from the things we're reading on Substack and beyond.
If you encounter any issues, you can always refer to the Notes FAQ for assistance. Looking forward to seeing you there!
