What is this?
Bizlet is Business Letters LLC, the coaching and consulting business started by Matthew Rechs in 2019. For this free newsletter, I write a weekly column on career and business topics, featuring topics like these:
“Argh, my manager… I cannot even.”
”Why isn’t my résumé working?”
”Can I negotiate this job offer/raise/promotion/salary review*?”
”What does it mean when my boss says ‘X’?”
'“How can I be a better manager/leader/product manager?
I write about emotional intelligence and psychological safety — important topics at work, in business, for managers and leaders of all kinds. I try to give straightforward, practical advice, while cutting through the nonsense. Sometimes this is called “saying the quiet part out loud.”
Why is this?
The world is changing. We want a more emotionally intelligent workplace, where people are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
We want emotionally intelligent leaders who tell the truth, say when they’re wrong, and who will help us create a workplace that looks like the world we want to live in.
Through my writing and my coaching practice I’m helping people build their Emotional Quotient (EQ) as they become happier, healthier, and more successful.
In my writing here, I’m sharing essays and guides to help you encounter the most difficult problems you’ll face. That includes topics like how to negotiate, work with sales, provide feedback, tackle different conversations, recruiting, hiring, and firing.
Why do I need This?
Because the world has changed in ways that meant that our lives at work will never be the same.
The pandemic, the DEI movement, and the shift to remote work have all left an indelible mark.
We want leaders who’ll tell the truth. We demand psychological safety — the freedom to speak up about problems without recrimination. We expect to be our authentic selves at work. We want managers who are open, transparent, receptive to feedback, and willing to admit their mistakes.
The time has passed for performatively authoritative and masculine leadership stereotypes. We’re ready for engaging, empathetic leaders with a “bias for compassion” who are supportive, vulnerable, and self-aware.
Looking for a new job today is literally the worst. It can be frustrating, dispiriting, and downright humiliating. All of these things make it harder to decide the best way to look for advancement in your career, or to ask for a promotion or raise.
You don’t have to do it alone.
I’m here to help you navigate these challenges, make important career decisions, and be more successful in your career. Together with my readers, we’re discovering healthy and sane ways to work together. And we’re having some fun doing it!
There’s safety in numbers.
By joining our community, you’ll be empowered by connections to others who are facing similar challenges. Everyone is welcome here. I encourage you to say what you need, and share what you know.
My newsletter is a publication that helps professionals learn how to overcome their obstacles and achieve their goals.
